About Sheryl

I have been practicing midwifery since 1985.

I have 4 grown up children and am loving being a grandmother.

My experience of my first birth lead me into midwifery. I felt alone and unsupported. I felt that no one was aware of what an enormous life changing experience becoming a mother is. And so I became a midwife. I wanted to be truly “with woman” as she embarks on motherhood – feeling strong, confident, transformed and joyful.

For me – that’s what midwifery is all about..

My primary philosophy is that pregnancy and birth is a period of great transformation – one that is necessary for parenting.

Having one to one midwifery care throughout pregnancy, birth and early parenting provides the best start to life with a newborn.

Pregnancy, birth and early mothering require a lot preparation on the part of the woman and her partner.

By choosing to have your care with a private midwife you can be sure that your care will be about you, your partner and your physical and emotional well being. You will have access to a vast library of essential reading material and DVD’s.

Each visit takes more than an hour to provide time to explore any issues or concerns you may have, to get to know each other and to share the excitement.

These visits can be conducted in your home or at Brookvale from where I run my clinic.

I believe very strongly that our culture does not prepare us for parenting. There are little or no customs or practices that protect new parents in this most vulnerable time of their lives.  Having your own midwife with continuity from early pregnancy through to the first 6 – 8 weeks of your baby’s life is the best start to your initiation into parenthood. It is one of the most challenging times of your life – you may be the happiest you have ever been but also the most overwhelmed.

Having someone you know and trust makes this time easier and more comforting – knowing your midwife will be by your side as you walk this unknown path.
